I really admire Nicole Fearfield for both her professionalism and the depth she brings to her practice. Her work has such a strong atmospheric presence — abstract, sea-inspired, and grounded in a lifelong relationship with water, light, and horizon.
Raised on an island and shaped early by years as a surf lifesaver on Australia’s east coast, Nicole’s connection to the ocean runs deep, later enriched by time spent living across London, Scotland, the Middle East, Asia, and Australia. That sense of movement and observation flows through her paintings, where energy and expansiveness are held within a calm, controlled structure.
Her practice continues to grow and evolve with real intention and discipline. Nicole’s work feels both expansive and refined — full of presence, depth, and quiet power.
Artist Bio
Nicole Fearfield’s abstract paintings capture a sense of freedom drawn from a love of the sea. They are sensory stories of nurture, wellbeing and joy and embody the spirit of what makes her feel alive.
Her paintings glow with an inner light through skilful colour mixing and layered glazing, curating a beautifully balanced palette that promotes richness, depth and colour vibration. Beginning with joyful memories of days at the beach and the sense of freedom it affords, she applies paint energetically and in broad strokes in a dynamic to- and fro, before layering continents of transparent colour.
Eroding the surface, she lets the light shine in, scraping sunlit reflections beaming into the shallows, or light refracting off waves and sand. Low values are uplifted by high; energetic early stages are counteracted by subtle layers.
In 2023, Nicole won the Revival Art and Design Emerging Art Prize, and was commissioned to create 22 original paintings for Brisbane’s luxury apartment development at West Village. Her paintings have been shown at Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane Affordable Art Fairs; selling out in Melbourne. Her work has appeared in Home Beautiful Magazine and was jury selected for publication in International Art Folio US 2022. Nicole works from her home studio in Brisbane.
