Chantelle and I met in a very memorable way—at an emerging art prize night at The Toowoomba Gallery, where we were both finalists. On a bit of a whim, I reached out to her on Instagram beforehand to see if she wanted to meet for a drink before the event. (I was keen to connect with like-minded artists.) She said yes, and the rest is history!

That night turned into something I’ll always remember—I ended up holding her drink as she gave her winning speech for The Next Big Thing Art Prize. Since then, we’ve stayed in touch regularly, and she even came to visit me at home in Clifton Beach, Tasmania.

Her work is compelling in its scale and physicality. Working primarily in large-scale abstraction, she draws directly from landscape, building surfaces through layers of oil, acrylic, and charcoal. There’s a sense of material push and pull in her paintings that feels both responsive and grounded, as though the work is formed through a dialogue with terrain itself.

Chantelle’s practice has a strong presence, shaped by both instinct and control, and it’s been a real pleasure to see her work develop and gain recognition.

Artiist Bio

Chantelle Stewart is an Australian contemporary artist working primarily in large-scale abstraction shaped by landscape and material. Based on Sydney’s Northern Beaches, her practice is grounded in direct engagement with terrain - layering oils, acrylics and charcoal. Each painting evolves through material resistance and response, resulting in compositions that feel both expansive and grounded. Stewart first gained national recognition after winning The Next Big Thing Art Prize and was most recently a finalist in the Paddington Art Prize, awarded to leading Australian landscape artists. Her works are held in private collections both in Australia and internationally. Very recently, Chantelle has become a finalist in the Abbotsleigh Grace Cossington Smith Art Award.
