I first came across Katey Love at the Glover Prize, and was instantly drawn to her work. I later had the chance to visit her studio in Battery Point in Hobart, where I ended up purchasing one of her paintings — a piece I still love.
Katey creates these beautifully imagined worlds inspired by her travels around Tasmania, always with a unique and personal twist. There’s a real sense of place in her work, but also a freedom in the way she reinterprets it — turning familiar landscapes into something slightly unexpected, layered, and full of story.
About the work
The Overland Track passes through an ancient landscape in the centre of Tasmania. 65km and 6 days of ever-changing scenery, from wild heathlands to dolerite mountain tops, and inbetween a magestic world of hidden lakes, buttongrass and dense rainforest, sometimes all encountered within one day of walking. I wanted to capture this epic walk in one abstract painting, and to distill that moment when you stop on the track and really study the plants, colours and textures surrounding you.
