Penny and I first met through the National Emerging Art Prize last year and immediately found common ground. We spoke at the exhibition opening at The Garden Gallery, where later that evening Penny was awarded the inaugural Photography Prize for her striking work Girl and the Moon. Having spent time with her and her work, it was no surprise why she won.

Penny’s photography is deeply attuned to the rhythm and emotional pull of the ocean. An open water swimmer, journalist, author, and mother, she has woven her lifelong love of photography into the fabric of daily life. Living near the sea in Newcastle, she heads to the water each day with cameras in hand, embracing the unpredictability of nature and the ever-changing moods of the ocean.

Her images are luminous, immersive and instinctive — capturing not just the beauty of the sea, but the joy, freedom and quiet reverence found within it.
