I know Sarah McGrath through exhibiting together at The Toowoomba Gallery and Ferris Wheel in Bowral, and I’ve long admired her work—it’s incredibly beautiful, technical, and so thoughtfully made.

Sarah paints with a kind of quiet precision. Her still lifes—often layered with vintage objects, soft fabrics, and delicate birdlife—have this luminous, almost photographic quality. There’s a calmness to them, but also a sense of life and movement that gently draws you in.

A favourite of mine is In the Studio (Kean Onn See) (2025), a finalist in the Portia Geach Memorial Award—it captures that same sensitivity and technical brilliance so perfectly. I’m always drawn to the care in her work and the way she elevates the everyday.

Sarah is an Australian artist specialising in oil painting. Sarah lives and works in her studio in the Harbourside suburb of Mosman in Sydney. In her still life practice Sarah’s aim is to capture the everyday narrative of simple objects by rendering light and réflection.

Artist Bio

Sarah has been selected in a range of art prizes including The Portia Geach portrait prize, The Ravenswood, Kennedy art prize and most recently The Still prize. Many of Sarah’s paintings are held in private collections in Australia and overseas.
